SAN JUAN CANTA, INTERNATIONAL CHOIR COMPETITION

San Juan, Argentina - June 19 to 24, 2025

The International Choir Competition SAN JUAN CANTA will take place in San Juan, Argentina, between June 19th - 24th, 2025.

Its main venue will be Auditorio Juan Victoria, located at Avenida 25 de Mayo 1215 oeste (San Juan).

A concert circuit will be prepared in various halls, museums and other venues of the city and surroundings for those choirs that wish to perform choral fraternity concerts, in addition to the performances of the Competition.

RULES OF THE COMPETITION:

We recommend reading each of the items in the Regulations carefully before completing the application form.
COMPETITION CATEGORIES:
a) Universal choral repertoire. Open to mixed, female, male, youth choirs and chamber groups
b) Popular choral music (Folklore, Jazz, Pop, Show-choir, Gospel, others) Open to mixed, female, male, youth choirs and chamber groups

Participants can choose one or another category, or compete in both.
COMPETITION - REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS:
A) CATEGORY UNIVERSAL CHORAL REPERTOIRE:

It must contain a minimum of four original choral compositions:
  • A piece of a composer born before 1800
  • A piece composed between 1801 and 1950
  • A piece composed after 1951
  • At least one of the presented songs has to be from the choir’s native country.
Arrangements choral are not allowed

The total duration of the audition will be at least 15 minutes and a maximum of 18 minutes, net time of the stage (counting from the beginning of the first piece to the end of the last one) The choir breaking these time limits will be penalized.

If the maximum 18 minutes time of performance is not reached, other supplementary songs may be chosen.

The organization will only provide a piano and organ.

It is recommended that the songs belong to different and varied styles and characters.

These repertoire requirements give each choir the ability to choose those works that allow them to showcase their interpretive strengths and show off their best musical qualities.
 
B) CATEGORY POPULAR CHORAL MUSIC

It must contain at least four works:
  • A Folklore work from the choir’s country
  • Works of popular character (Folklore, Jazz, Pop, Show-choir, Gospel, others)

It is allowed the use of a small instrumental accompaniment. The organization will only provide a piano.
The use of traditional or folkloric clothing from each country is welcome and will be awarded.
The total duration of the audition will be at least 15 minutes and a maximum of 18 minutes, net time of the stage (counting from the beginning of the first piece to the end of the last one);
The choir breaking these time limits will be penalized.

These repertoire requirements give each choir the ability to choose those works that allow them to showcase their interpretive strengths and show off their best musical qualities.

C) MANDATORY WORK OUT OF COMPETITION:

All the choirs of SAN JUAN CANTA (in Festival and Competition) must necessarily participate in the Closing Concert, performing the mandatory works that will be informed with due anticipation. They must be studied in advance, they will be previously rehearsed and they will be performed as closing works of SAN JUAN CANTA under the direction of the President of the Jury or other prestigious guest conductor. Any questions about these requirements will be answered by prior consultation with the President of the Artistic Committee Prof. María Elina Mayorga ([email protected]) or will be resolved by the Jury. The decision will be final and unappealable.
APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION:
Registration deadline: March 25th, 2025

To apply you must send the following material:

1) Application form completed
An entry form must be submitted for each chosen category. If they wish to compete in both categories, they must send two forms with their respective repertoire.
2) Brief resume of the director (in Word format - 300 words maximum) and the choir (in Word format - 300 words maximum)
3) Two recent high-resolution digital photographs of the choir and director (minimum 1Mb, in color .jpeg or .png format)
4) Recent recording (demo audio, video or link) with a minimum of 15 minutes of a cappella classical and popular music, together with all the scores of all the recorded works
5) Competition program proposal (in Word format) that meets the requirements mentioned in the item "Competition repertoire requirements", including:
  • lists of proposed works,
  • duration of each one,
  • full names and dates of the composers and arrangers,
  • translations into Spanish of all those compositions in other languages,
  • copies of all the scores, complete and legible, of the proposed programs.
Note: The organization does not provide instruments except those of the Juan Victoria Auditorium (piano and organ) This proposal may be modified respecting the repertoire requirements until April 25th, 2025.
6) List of members, including full name and surname, identity document, age and choir section (in a Word or Excel table). This list may be modified for reasons of force majeure until May 15th, 2025
7) Payment of the single registration fee that will be paid when the choir receives the notification of participation from the Artistic Committee

The data entered in the registration application have the value of an affidavit.

Incomplete shipments or after the indicated date will not be accepted.

Notes:
  • Particular attention is paid to the repertoire and quality of performance presented on the audition recording submitted with the application.
  • The material sent will not be returned. All registered choirs must await notification of admission by the Organizing Committee.

REGISTRATION FEE:

The registration fee is USD 50 (fifty American dollars) PER PERSON EXCEPT THE CONDUCTOR.
The total payment calculation must be carried out as follows:
number of singers + number of companions x 50 USD = registration fee.

This registration fee will be paid only by the selected choirs after receiving the corresponding notification.

ADMISSION:
The Artistic Committee will select the choirs that will participate in the Competition based on the documentation and demos received.

Choirs will be notified of the selection results by April 1st, 2025.

The list of choirs that will participate will be informed by e-mail to the applicants and publicly disseminated through this website, the press and social networks.

Early-bird applications are welcome, and the organizers of SAN JUAN CANTA can provide an early confirmation to choirs where this is possible.
SELECTED CHOIRS - FINAL REGISTRATION:
Those selected for the Competition must ratify their participation until April 20th, 2025 through reliable communication, sending a note of commitment to participate and compliance with the Regulations to the Organizing Committee, and a copy of the final registration payment to [email protected].

Note: For early-bird registrations until February 25th, 2025, a 15% discount is offered on the final registration fee.

REGISTRATION FEE:

The registration fee consists of a total of 50 USD (fifty American dollars) per person excluding the conductor. That includes:
  • Welcoming cocktail.
  • Informative schedule.
  • Touristic information.
  • Bilingual assistance (English / Spanish) for the participant choirs)
  • Concerts at Auditorio Juan Victoria, the most famous concert hall in South America, distinguished by its perfect acoustics.
  • Grand piano Steinway & Sons y J. W. Walker organ at your disposal at Auditorio Juan Victoria.
  • Free access to all concerts.
  • Jury and invited professionals of recognized international prestige.
  • Closing concert, under a prestigious conductor of international renown.
  • Participation certificates.
  • Participation trophy elaborated by a local artist.
  • Local presents as courtesy for the conductors.
  • A farewell toast.
  • Audiovisual coverage broadcasted on the YouTube channel of San Juan Canta.

No refunds will be made for any reason.

The registration fee allows choirs to participate in one or both categories of the Competition.

Visa requirements:

If a visa or other requirements to enter the country are necessary, they are the sole responsibility of the participating choir.
The process and cost of Visas are the sole responsibility of the choir. The organization will support a choir in its application through a letter on request.
TRANSPORTATION AND ACCOMMODATION EXPENSES:
Completely on each choirs’ own expense, from and to their original city and during their stay in San Juan. Visit Tourism.

For organizational and logistical reasons, the choirs must make their hotel reservations through the official agency of San Juan Canta, TURISMO VITTORIO. The agency will offer hotel alternatives in single, double, triple, multiple rooms in categories of 2, 3, 4 and 5 stars at your choice according to your possibilities.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION:
The Competition will be held in a single event at Auditorio Juan Victoria.
The Jury will be made up of a President and four (4) members, all professionals of great prestige and international experience.
The President of the Artistic Committee Prof. María Elina Mayorga will participate in the sessions with voice and without vote.

The evaluation of the Jury will pay special attention to the following criteria:
  1. Technical performance: tuning, rhythm, phrasing, accuracy with respect to the written text and pronunciation, direction.
  2. Artistic performance: tempo, dynamic flexibility, interpretation of the text, faithful interpretation of the style, choral sound quality, balance, repertoire selection criteria and level of difficulty, understanding of the meaning of the text and its emotions.
  3. The general presentation and duration of the performances will also be evaluated.

The decisions of the Jury will be final and unappealable.
The test of each category will be open to the public.
The time of performance will not be interrupted by applause.
In case a choir exceeds the time limit by more than 30 seconds, it will have a penalty in its evaluation. The same rule will be applied for each minute less than the minimum performance time required.
The Competition will end with the Closing Ceremony and the Grand Gala Concert that includes the awards ceremony, performance of the winners and joint closing with all the participants of SAN JUAN CANTA interpreting the mandatory work.
In said Ceremony and Gala Concert, all the directors and all the singers of all the participants of SAN JUAN CANTA must be present.

Disqualifications:

Each choir must respect their order of performance. If you do not show up at the time of the call, you will be automatically disqualified and may remain in the room for the rest of the competition as a spectator.
AWARDS:
The Competition will be endowed with two prizes in each category:

a) Universal Choral Repertoire:
  • First Prize GOVERNMENT OF SAN JUAN consisting of monetary prize, diploma and trophy
  • ARTURO BERUTI Second Prize consisting of monetary prize, diploma and trophy

b) Popular Choral Music:
  • First Prize GOVERNMENT OF SAN JUAN consisting of monetary prize, diploma and trophy
  • ARTURO BERUTI Second Prize consisting of monetary prize, diploma and trophy

The winning choirs of the first and second prize of both categories of the Competition will perform at the Grand Concert of Winning Choirs at the Juan Victoria Auditorium on Monday, June 23 at 8:00 p.m. The Jury will determine the order of performance and will indicate to each winner the work(s) that they will perform at said concert.

The Jury may declare any of the prizes void as well as redistribute or institute other prizes and/or special mentions. Among them and just by way of example:

• best interpretation of a sacred composition,
• best interpretation of a romantic, contemporary or other style work
• best interpretation of a popular or folkloric work,
• best artistic performance of the director,
• best repertoire selection
• best interpretation of new compositions
• other prizes and recognitions at the discretion of the Jury

All the prizes will be announced during the closing ceremony in the presence of the public, the Jury and members of the participating choirs.
All choir directors must be present on stage during this ceremony.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS OF THE COMPETITION:
  • At the time of accreditation (on Thursday, June 19th, 7pm at Club Sirio Libanés - Entre Rios 33 sur), each choir will deliver to the Jury six (6) bound and sorted copies of the entire repertoire.
  • Choirs undertake to respect these Regulations and to comply with all scheduled activities, not being able to carry out other performances in the province of San Juan outside of the Competition.
  • The repertoire cannot be replaced after April 25th, 2025
  • The scores must be in the key in which they will be interpreted and the works will be sung in their original language;
  • It is contrary to law to perform music that has been reproduced illegally. Should a choir do so, the festival accepts no responsibility for any action taken by publishers.
  • Dances, amplification and encores are not allowed;
  • It is mandatory to observe strict punctuality and attendance at all competition activities, as well as mandatory compliance with the duration of the respective performances.
  • The organization may modify the activities and general programming for reasons of force majeure.
  • By registering, all participating choirs and artists grant the organizers unlimited and free of charge all legal rights to record and photograph all performances; as well as produce CDs and/or DVDs, publish and/or broadcast the performances by all means, among other purposes.
  • The organization will assist applicants by sending an official invitation letter to all applicants.
  • The organizers do not accept any responsibility for any kind of accident, illness, loss of luggage or other travel risks that may occur during SAN JUAN CANTA. It is requested by the Administration of Auditorio Juan Victoria to take your forecasts through travel insurance that include all kinds of medical and / or legal situations before arriving in San Juan.
  • Any question of interpretation about of this Rules will be resolved on the official wording in Spanish.
  • Any situation not contemplated in these Regulations will be resolved unilaterally by the Organizing Committee and its decision will be final and unappealable.

Sunday, June 22nd at 8:30pm: Category Popular Choral music
d) Rehearsals of the mandatory work
e) Closing Ceremony by all choirs and Grand Gala Concert (performance of the winning choirs at Auditorio Juan Victoria) and Closing joint performance of the mandatory work: Monday, June 23rd, 2025 at 8:00pm
The Jury can invite a choir of the Festival to participate in the final Grand Gala Concert on June 23rd, 2025 (To be confirmed)

2) OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

Choral Fraternity Concerts in schools, museums and other locations
Conferences and workshops open to conductors, singers and other musicians who wish to participate individually. These activities are optional for the participants, so they will have to complete the corresponding application form.

Concert tours:

Contacts in other provinces and limiting countries will be provided to choirs that wish to organize other concerts before or after the Competition.
