COMPETITION REGISTRATION

Choirs can register in the two modalities (festival and competition) and in the two competition categories: 1. Universal choral repertoire and 2. Popular, folk and/or traditional choral music, completing each form.

REGULATIONS:

We recommend that you carefully read each of the items in the Regulations before completing the application form.
COMPETITION CATEGORIES:
  1. Universal Choral Repertoire - Open to mixed, female, male, youth choirs and chamber groups
  2. Popular, Folk and/or Traditional Choral Music - Open to mixed, female, male, youth choirs and chamber groups.

Participants can choose one or the other category, or compete in both.
COMPETITION REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS:
Universal Choral Repertoire Category:

It must contain at least four works: three contrasting compositions of different styles at the director's choice (for example: one Baroque, one romantic and one contemporary work); Y
at least one of them must be an original composition or arrangement by an author from the country of the competing choir.

Instruments for accompaniment are allowed.

Popular, Folk and/or Traditional Choral Music Category:

It must contain at least four works freely chosen by the director from the universal popular, folk and/or traditional repertoire (original compositions and/or choral arrangements).

Instruments for accompaniment are allowed.

The use of traditional or folkloric clothing from each country is welcome and will be rewarded.

These repertoire requirements give each choir the opportunity to choose those works that allow them to show their interpretive strengths and show off their best musical qualities.

MANDATORY WORK, OUT OF COMPETITION:

All the choirs of SAN JUAN CANTA (in Festival and Competition) must participate in the Closing Concert, performing the mandatory work (it will be informed). It must be studied in advance, it will be rehearsed previously and it will be performed as the closing work of SAN JUAN CANTA under the direction of a prestigious guest conductor.

Any questions about these requirements will be answered by prior consultation with the President of the Artistic Committee Prof. María Elina Mayorga ([email protected]) or will be resolved by the Jury. The decision will be final and unappealable.

APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION:
To participate you must send, before March 25, 2023, the following material:

1) Application form, completed and signed (all pages) A form must be submitted for each chosen category. If you wish to compete in both categories, you must send two forms with your respective repertoire
2) Brief resume of the conductor (in Word format - 300 words maximum) and of the choir (in Word format - 300 words maximum)
3) Two recent digital photos of the choir and the conductor in high resolution (in color jpeg format)
4) Recent recording (audio or video link) with a minimum of 15 minutes of a cappella classical and popular music, together with all the scores of all recorded works
5) Competition program proposal (in Word format) that meets the requirements mentioned in the item "Contest repertoire requirements", including:
- lists of proposed works,
- duration of each,
- full names and dates of the composers and arrangers,
- translations into Spanish of all those compositions in other languages,
- copies of all scores, complete and legible, of the proposed programs.
Note: The organization does not provide instruments except those of the Juan Victoria Auditorium (piano and organ)
This proposal may be modified respecting the repertoire requirements until May 15, 2023.
6) List of members, including full name and surname, ID, age and section (in a Word or Excel table). This list may be modified for reasons of force majeure until May 15, 2023.
7) Payment of the single registration fee that will be paid when the choir receives notification of participation from the Artistic Committee: 40 USD (US dollars) for each singer, except only the conductor.

The material sent will not be returned. All registered choirs must await notification of admission by the Organizing Committee.
ADMISSION:
The Artistic Committee will select the choirs that will participate in the Competition based on the documents and demos received.

The choirs will be notified of the selection result on March 30, 2023.

The list of choirs that will participate will be informed by email to the applicants and will be published through this website, the press and social networks.
SELECTED CHOIRS - FINAL REGISTRATION:
The choirs selected for the Competition must ratify their participation until April 15, 2023 by reliable communication, sending a note of commitment to participate and comply with the Regulations to the Organizing Committee, and a copy of the final registration deposit.
REGISTRATION FEE:
The registration fee is USD 40 (forty American dollars) per person, excluding the conductor only, and includes:

This registration fee will be paid only by the selected choirs after receiving the corresponding notification.

We would appreciate a single payment for the total registration of the choir members.
TRANSPORTATION AND ACCOMMODATION EXPENSES:
Totally at the expense of each participating choir, from and to their city of origin and during their stay.

The organization will provide hotel, gastronomic and tourist information to guide the participants, who will be able to freely choose their accommodation according to their economic possibilities and interests.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION:
The competition will take place in a single test in the Juan Victoria Auditorium.

Saturday, June 17 at 8:30 p.m.: Competition in the Universal Choral Repertoire category.

Sunday, June 18 at 8:30 p.m.: Competition in the Popular, Folk and/or Traditional Choral Music category.

In both categories:

• the total duration of the test will be a minimum of 18 minutes and a maximum of 20 minutes, net stage time (counting from the beginning of the first piece to the end of the last);
• the performance time will not be interrupted by applause;
• in case of free time after fulfilling the repertoire requirements, it may be completed with compositions freely chosen by the conductor within the same framework of requirements of each category;
• the repertoire cannot be replaced after May 15, 2023;
• works will only be admitted a cappella, or with piano/organ. Other instruments will not be admitted, except those of folkloric and/or popular roots required for the performance;
• the scores must be in the key in which they will be performed and the works will be sung in the original language;
• choirs must use legal copies of their sheet music;
• amplification and encores are not supported;
• it is forbidden to dance on the Juan Victoria Auditorium stage;
• At the time of accreditation (Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 12:00 at San Juan Canta's office), each choir will deliver seven (7) bound and labeled copies of the entire repertoire for the Jury's follow-up.

JURORS AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:

SAN JUAN CANTA will be fully supervised by the President of the Artistic Committee, Prof. María Elina Mayorga. The Jury will be composed of a president and four (4) members, all professionals of great prestige and international experience.

The President of the Artistic Committee, Prof. María Elina Mayorga, will participate in the sessions with voice and without vote.

In case a choir exceeds the time limit by more than 30 seconds, it will have a penalty in its evaluation. The same rule will apply for each minute less than the minimum performance time required.

The evaluation of the Jury will pay special attention to the following criteria:

A) technical performance: tuning, rhythm, phrasing, accuracy with respect to the written text and pronunciation, direction.

B) artistic performance: tempo, dynamic flexibility, interpretation of the text, faithful interpretation of the style, quality of the choral sound, balance, selection criteria of the repertoire and level of difficulty, understanding of the meaning of the text and its emotions.

The general presentation and duration of the performances will also be evaluated.

The decisions of the Jury will be final and unappealable.

Preliminary Contest schedule for both categories (subject to confirmation):

The order of performance will be determined by lottery at the time of accreditation (Thursday, June 15, at 12:00 at San Juan Canta's office). Members of the Organizing Committee and the Jury will participate in this draw. Each conductor or a designated member representing each of the choirs must be present.

TESTS:

Saturday June 17: Universal Choral Repertoire Category
8.30 pm:
Competition at the Juan Victoria Auditorium.

Sunday June 18: Popular, folkloric and/or traditional choral music category
8.30 pm:
Competition at the Juan Victoria Auditorium.

Monday, June 19, 8:00 p.m.: Gala concert for the winners (first and second prize in both categories) at the Juan Victoria Auditorium.

The tests of each category will be open to the public, who will participate with their vote, awarding the choir of their choice.

The counting of votes will be in charge of the Organizing Committee together with the president of the Jury and representatives of the competing choirs. The result will be immediately informed to the Jury in writing.
The Competition will end on Monday, June 19, starting at 8:00 p.m. with the Closing Ceremony and the Grand Gala Concert that includes the awards ceremony, performance by the winners and a joint closing with all the participants of SAN JUAN CANTA performing the mandatory work.

All the conductors and all the singers of all the participants of SAN JUAN CANTA must be present at the Gala Ceremony and Concert.

Disqualifications

Each choir must respect its order of performance. If you are not present at the time of the call, you will be automatically disqualified and may remain in the hall for the rest of the contest as a spectator.

The list of members included in the Registration application will be irremovable. If there are replacements or absences, they must be notified with reason to the Organizing Committee before May 15, 2023.

AWARDS:

The Contest will be endowed with two prizes in each category:

Universal choral repertoire category:
• First Prize GOVERNMENT OF SAN JUAN: diploma and trophy.
• Second Prize ARTURO BERUTI: diploma and trophy.

Popular, folk and/or traditional choral music:
• First Prize GOVERNMENT OF SAN JUAN: diploma and trophy.
• Second Prize ARTURO BERUTI: diploma and trophy.

On Monday June 19 at 10:00 the Extraordinary Session of the Jury will be held in the Juan Victoria Auditorium. The Jury will notify the participants of the result of both categories of the contest in Extraordinary Session. It must be attended by all the conductors of the competing groups.

The winning choirs of the first and second prize of both categories of the Competition will perform in the Great Concert of Winning Choirs in the Juan Victoria Auditorium on Monday, June 19 at 8:00 p.m. The Jury will determine the order of performance and will indicate to each winner the work(s) that they will perform.

The Jury may declare some of the prizes void as well as redistribute or institute other prizes and/or special mentions. Among them and only by way of example:

• best performance of a sacred composition,
• best performance of a romantic, contemporary or other work (for example),
• best performance of a popular or folkloric work,
• best artistic performance of the conductor,
• best repertoire selection,
• best interpretation of new compositions,
• other awards and recognitions at the discretion of the Jury

The decisions of the Jury will be final and unappealable.

All the prizes will be announced during the closing ceremony in the presence of the public, the Jury and members of the participating choirs.

All choir conductors must be present on stage during this ceremony.
CHORAL ACTIVITIES SCHEDULE:
1) Mandatory activities:

a) Check-in: Thursday, June 15th, at 12 pm in San Juan Canta's office at Auditorio Juan Victoria.
b) Welcome cocktail: a brief performance by all choirs on Thursday, August 15th, at 8.00 pm
c) Competition performances at Auditorio Juan Victoria:
  • Saturday, June 17th, at 8.30 pm Category Universal choral repertoire.
  • Sunday, June 18th, at 8.30 pm Category Popular, folk and/or traditional choral music
d) Closing Ceremony by all choirs and Grand Gala Concert (performance of the winning choirs at Auditorio Juan Victoria) and Closing joint performance of the mandatory work: Monday 19th, 8.00 pm.
e) Rehearsals of the mandatory work (out of competition)

2) Optional activities:

- Choral Fraternity Concerts: to be held on June 15th and 16th, together with the festival and competition participating choirs in various cultural spaces of the city and surroundings (a free-choice program of 20 minutes net of the stage including applause)

- Lectures and workshops open to conductors, singers and musicians who wish to participate individually. These activities are optional for the contestants, for which they must complete the corresponding application form.

12 pm: Accreditation of the participants (San Juan Canta´s office) Drawing of the order of performance for Contestants in the office of the Competition in the Auditorio Juan Victoria and delivery of the seven (7) required bound copies of the entire repertoire proposed for the Contest.
- Morning and afternoon: Choral fraternity concerts in schools, museums and various halls of the city and its surroundings.

- 10 am: Extraordinary Session of the Jury, notification of the winning choirs. Determination of order of performance for the Closing Ceremony and Grand Gala Concert of the winners at the Auditorio Juan Victoria
- 3.30pm: Rehearsal of the mandatory work
- 8.00 pm: Closing Ceremony and Grand Gala Concert of the Winners at the Auditorio Juan Victoria. Closing joint performance of the mandatory work under the direction of a prestigious guest conductor.
- Farewell party

Tuesday, June 20th:

- Free morning and afternoon: optional touristic and recreational activities
- The departure of the choirs and special guests.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE COMPETITION:
The choirs commit to respect these Rules and to accomplish all of the programmed activities, not being allowed to perform any other concerts in San Juan other than those that take part in the Competition.

It is compulsory to respect punctuality and attendance to all of the competition’s activities, as well as the obligatory deference towards performance duration.

In case that a visa or other entry paperwork is needed, each choir will be responsible for those.

The organization will help the applicants by sending an official invitation letter to anyone who requires it.

There will be no reimbursements under any circumstances after the definitive application.

The organization may modify the activities and schedule for reasons of force majeure.

When applying all the choirs and artists involved yield absolutely and freely to the organizers all legal rights to photograph and record all performances; as well as to produce CD and/or DVD, publish and/or broadcast through any means their performances, among other aims.

The organizers take no responsibility for any kind of accident, disease, loss of luggage or other traveling risks that could occur during SAN JUAN CANTA, International Choral Competition and Festival. We suggest taking all precautions through travel insurance that foresees any medical and/or legal situation before your arrival in San Juan.

The organization has the power to determine the rescheduling or cancellation of scheduled activities, within the framework of the health measures corresponding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organizers do not assume any responsibility in the event of programming changes or cancellations due to force majeure.

Any interpretation concern will be resolved on the official drafting in Spanish.

Any situation not considered in this Regulations will be resolved unilaterally by the Organizing Committee and its decision will be final and unappealable.
