San Juan, Argentina

June 17 - 20, 2021

IMPORTANT NOTICE: San Juan Canta has scheduled its next edition for June 2021. However, we clarify to those interested that it can only be done if the general and sanitary conditions post COVID-19 allow us to guarantee the health of all those involved in the possible programming : Jurors, participating choirs, organizers and public.

RULES | COMPETITION

The International Choir Competition SAN JUAN CANTA will take place in San Juan, Argentina, between June 17 - 20, 2021.

Its main headquarters will be Auditorio Juan Victoria, located at Avenida 25 de Mayo 1215 oeste (San Juan)

A concert circuit will be prepared in various halls, museums and other spaces of the city and the surrounding departments for those choirs that wish to perform choral fraternity concerts, in addition to the performances of the Competitions.

It will be done in two categories:

a) Universal choral repertoire. Open to amateur mixed choirs, female, male, children-youth choirs and chamber groups (minimum 16 singers)

b) Popular, folk and/or traditional choral music. Open to amateur mixed choirs, female, male, youth and chamber groups (minimum 16 singers)

Participants can choose one or another category, or compete in both.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

Category Universal Choral Repertoire

Each choir has to perform at least four compositions:

• three contrasting works of different styles and periods at the choice of the conductor (i.e.: Baroque, Romantic, Contemporary or others);

• at least one composition or arrangement by an author of the country the choir comes from.

Instruments are admitted for accompaniment. The use of traditional or folk clothing of each country is welcome.

Category Popular, Folk and/or Traditional Choral Music

It must contain at least four works freely chosen by the conductor among the popular, folkloric and/or traditional repertoire (original compositions and/or choral arrangements)

Instruments are admitted for accompaniment. The use of traditional or folk clothing of each country is welcome and will be awarded.

Mandatory work out of competition:

All choirs SAN JUAN SING (in Festival, Competition and Grand Prix) must necessarily participate in the closing concert performing "Let All the World in Every Corner Sing" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. It must be studied in advance, it will be previously rehearsed and it will be interpreted as a closing work of SAN JUAN CANTA conducted by a prestigious guest professional.

Any doubt about these requirements will be answered by the previous consultation with the Chairman of the Artistic Committee Prof. María Elina Mayorga ([email protected]) or will be resolved by the Jury. The decision will be final.

These repertoire requirements give each choir the possibility to choose those works that allow them to show their performative strengths and show off their best artistic qualities.
