GRAND PRIX: RULES AND APPLICATION FORM

The Grand Prix SAN JUAN CANTA will take place in San Juan, Argentina, between August 19th - 20th, 2018. Its main seat will be Auditorio Juan Victoria, situated at Avenida 25 de Mayo 1215 oeste (San Juan) Other concerts will be held in churches, museums and other cultural venues.

Mixed, female, male and chamber amateur choirs (minimum 16 singers), winners of the first and second prizes of Ansilta, San Juan Canta and other partner international competitions (for example Tolosa, Arezzo, Béla Bartók, Cork, Marktoberdorf, Maribor and others alike) are invited to participate. Those choirs that won the first or second prize in the San Juan Canta 2018 Competition can also take part in the competition.

GRAND PRIX REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS:

The repertoire must include contrasting pieces, one of which can be folkloric (from the country of the performing choir) and can last no longer than 20 minutes. The use of traditional instruments is admitted for accompaniment. The use of traditional or folkloric clothing of each country is also welcome.

The winning choirs of the first and second prize of San Juan Canta 2018 that compete for the Grand Prix SAN JUAN CANTA are allowed to repeat one work only from the repertoire used for the Competition. The rest must be new repertoire for the GRAND PRIX that meets the requirements detailed before.

MANDATORY WORK (out of competition): all choirs (in Festival, Competitions and Grand Prix) must participate in the Closing Concert performing the Gustav Holst’s Psalm 148. The work must be studied deeply in advance, will be pre-rehearsed and will be performed as the closing work of SAN JUAN CANTA under the direction of a prestigious guest conductor.
Any doubt about these requirements will be answered by the previous consultation with the Chairman of the Artistic Committee Prof. María Elina Mayorga (sanjuancanta@gmail.com) or will be resolved by the Jury.
The decision will be final.
These repertoire requirements give each choir the possibility to choose those works that allow them to show their interpretive strengths and show their best musical qualities.

ABOUT THE GRAND PRIX:

GRAND PRIX SAN JUAN CANTA will be held in a single event at the Auditorio Juan Victoria on Sunday, August 19th, 2018.

- Only a cappella works, or with piano/organ accompaniment will be accepted. Other instruments will not be admitted except for those of folk and/or popular roots required for the interpretation of the works.

- Choirs must use legal copies of their scores.
- Amplification and encores are not allowed.

The choirs will be evaluated with a score of up to 10 points maximum (it is admitted up to one decimal: for example, 9.5, but not 9.75). In case a choir exceeds the time limit for more than 30 seconds, each extra minute will mean one less point in the score. The evaluation of the Jury will especially address the following criteria:

a) technical performance: intonation, rhythm, phrasing, accuracy to score and pronunciation.
b) artistic performance: tempo, agogic, dynamic flexibility, text interpretation, style, choral sound quality, balance, repertoire selection criteria and level of difficulty, comprehension of the meaning of the text and its emotions.
